When to contact us:

- If painkillers are not providing relief
- If you experience toothache along with any of the following symptoms:
- High temperature
- Red or swollen gums
- Swelling in the cheek or jaw
- A bad taste in your mouth
- Pain when biting down
When to visit A&E:
- If there is swelling around your eye or neck
- If swelling in your mouth or jaw is affecting your ability to breathe, swallow, or speak
Out of hours advice for toothache:
- Take over-the-counter pain relief such as ibuprofen or paracetamol for your mouth. Consult a pharmacist if you need advice.
- Stick to soft foods, avoid chewing on the sore tooth, and stay away from foods that are sweet, hot, or cold.
- Avoid smoking, as it can worsen dental issues.
- Keep the affected area clean with regular rinses using warm salt water (½ teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water) or Peroxyl mouthwash.
- If you've lost a filling and it's causing discomfort, clean the tooth and use a temporary filling to reduce any sharp edges.
What does an emergency dental appointment include?
An emergency dental appointment generally includes a full examination of your mouth, teeth, gums, and jaws to determine the nature and extent of the problem. Once we've diagnosed the issue, we'll develop a treatment plan and go over all your options with you. We'll also discuss any risks or potential complications associated with the proposed treatment. We might not be able to complete the treatment on the same day, but we will carry out any remedial work to help manage your pain or ensure the problem doesn't get any worse. This could include:
- Prescribing antibiotics for a tooth infection
- Temporarily covering a tooth after a lost crown
- Filing the edges of a chipped tooth
